Rivet - Genius

I have just finished watching some movies I had put on my laptop for travel away. Sounds dull I hear you cry. Well yes it would be without the fact that I watched it on my tv via my xbox whilst working on laptop...

Rivet is the culprit.

It works fantastically well. No complaints, no problems. Easy setup, easy usage, literally drag and drop the movies you want to watch into the appropriate folder. True not all codecs are allowed, but frankly nearly all of them work - only matroska seems to be against the rules.

If you're thinking of an Apple TV and already have an Xbox 360, get it - only £20. Admittedly not for iTunes content yet, but hopefully we'll get around that soon.

9 out of 10 definitely.

Thanks to my Kindle I have recently been reading Robert Rankin. His books are wonderfully funny, with a great bit of Terry Pratchett-esque colloquialism - all very down to earth, but with beautiful flights of fancy too.

I have read 1 book previously (the Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse - fabulous) and these two - Necrophenia and Japanese Devil Fish Girl were on my Kindle.

The newest (Japanese Devil Fish Girl) is the best of the latest two - truly a writer improving with age!

I would definitely read all of his books. Easy to read, great comedy and very cleverly insightful!

I have bought this now.

It is a wonderfully good word processor. It makes my first drafts so so much easier - then I transfer to Word 2011 for extreme compatibility and easier Endnote usage. Were the new beta patch for endnote not to have arrived, and I hadn't already bought Endnote X4 - it would have been Nisus and Bookends every step of the way.

The Kindle Cometh...

It is awesome...

I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to like it, but after my initial reticence I have fully embraced it. All my books are now bought for this. I read the paper on this. I read pdfs and journal papers on this. It is my little friend.

It is not an iPad.

It is not a laptop.

It is, like the iPod was for music, the quintessentially perfect reading device. It looks like a book, acts like a book, holds many books. The whispernet is fabulous - literally turn it on just as I get to the tube (underground, no reception) and the paper is already there!

Perfect!

The Chemical Brother's new album builds of the strengths of 2007's 'We Are The Night'.

No guest vocalists. Swirling electronica. Staggering build-ups. Beautiful soundscapes.

Gone are the days of big-beat breakdowns. This is a maturing and beautifully able band pushing forwards. This is electronica for those with discerning palettes.

Great stuff.

Deftones - Diamond Eyes

Even without their severely injured bassist Chi Cheng Deftones have returned with a stonking album.

This is almost a culmination of their art - marrying the ferocity of Adrenaline and Around The Fur with the more experimental and electronic White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist.

All of the songs are beautiful in their layered texture and aching vocals. This cannot easily be expressed in words. It is Deftones to the max.

Kindle or iPad?

Now should I buy an iPad or a Kindle?

Now obviously, I actually don't have any money for either and other things are more important at the moment (food, work, lady etc), but it's the thought...

Kindle = cheap. VERY cheap. Good contrast. World leader in eBookiness.

iPad = Expensive. Good for everything. World leader in Tablets...

God I don't know. It might have to be the kindle you know...

Unless I get my desire - an Apple iphone-ipad-iTV-Macbook Pro syncing system that is useful and works independently of others, i.e. iphone and ipad can sync, as can macbook pro and itv etc...

We'll see.
