• Nitroimidazole antibiotic

• Damage bacterial DNA after nitro group of drug is reduced to reactive intermediates.  Inhibits bacterial DNA and therefore protein synthesis.

• Bactericidal

• Treatment of infection by anaerobic (and microaerophilic) bacteria and protozoa

• Prophylaxis & treatment of infection from colonic anaerobes especially Bacteriodes fragilis.

• Enhances the effect of warfarin
