• Beta-lactam antibiotic

• Second generation cephalosporin

• Inhibit peptido-glycan cross-linking and hence inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis.

• Bactericidal

• Improved Gram -ve cover, but less Gram +ve cover (cf 1st Gen)

• Good penetration to body tissues and fluids, low CSF transfer unless inflamed

• Commonly used prophylactic post-operatively

• Penicillin allergy means allergy to cephalosporins.

• Slow IV infusion/injection - 750mg TDS, may be doubled in severe infections
