Write about Carcinoid tumour here. • Rare tumour • Less malignant than bronchial carcinoma, due to: • Rarely metastasising • Slow growth • Though may invade locally • Not related to smoking • Affects younger patients • Most arise in main bronchi • Present with haemoptysis and wheeze • On bronchoscopy, smooth rounded appearance (cherry-like) • May bleed profusely on biopsy • Most cured by resection • Very rarely metastasises to the liver where secretion of substances such as 5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) produces the carcinoid syndrome of flushing, diarrhoea and wheeze |
